Cow mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland caused by trauma or infection. It is the most common and costly disease in dairy cattle, affecting milk yield and quality. Mastitis can be classified as subclinical or clinical, depending on the severity of the symptoms. Subclinical mastitis is asymptomatic and detected by testing milk for somatic cell counts. Clinical mastitis is characterized by visible signs of inflammation, such as swelling, redness, pain, heat, and abnormal milk appearance.

Subclinical mastitis is also a risk factor for developing clinical mastitis, which can have more severe consequences for animal health and welfare. Subclinical mastitis can be detected by testing milk for somatic cell counts (SCCs), which indicate the level of inflammation in the udder. Subclinical mastitis can be reduced by implementing preventive measures such as good hygiene, proper milking procedures, dry cow therapy, and selective culling of chronically infected cows. Subclinical mastitis can also be treated by using antibiotics or alternative therapies, depending on the causative pathogen and the organic status of the farm.
